So it has come to that time of year again where we are forced to bask in festive cheer, singing loud for all to hear. Tis the seasons where we sip on mulled wine, wear the most ridiculous wooly Christmas jumpers and most importantly where listening to WHAM’ Last Christmas (Or in my case the Billie Piper version! Creased) is a part of our daily routine. So I’ve taken my time out to give you my favourite songs for this time of year. Enjoy fellow scrooges!
#1 The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York
Released in 1987, this song is a lot different from your usual ‘sleigh bells’ and ‘miseltoe’ loving Christmas song. I remember my Nan playing me this song as a kid and I just love it more and more every year. It’s no surprise that this song has been voted the greatest Christmas single ever in the UK.
#2 My Chemical Romance – All I Want For Christmas Is You
This 2004 cover of Mariah Carey ranks highly on my list just because MCR dominated my iPod as a kid. Also it doesn’t sound like your usual annoyingly happy Christmas ballad. I love you My Chem.
#3 She & Him – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
I didn’t think it was possible for me to be more jealous of Zoey Deschanel, that’s until I listened to She & Him. Not only is she beautiful, her voice, is amazing. Her soft tones and cute pitch makes this Christmas song for me but if anything makes me want to be her ten times more.
#4 Lower Than Atlantis – Merry Christmas (Wherever You Are)
This Watford born band are definitely people to look out for. Although I’ve branded most Christmas songs as insanely happy and insanely annoying, I love this song for just that. I wouldn’t say it was annoying but it does make me want to dance and SING LOUD FOR ALL TO HEAR. Sorry, Elf reference. Mike Duce’s voice just gives this song justice, I love you LTA.
#5 Blink 182 – I Won’t Be Home For Christmas
It would not be a Christmas playlist without my boys Blink 182. The song tells of a man that’s fed up of Christmas and everything that’s associated with it so he attacks some carol singers and ends up in jail. I love this song just for its offensive view of Christmas. I love it, I love them.
#6 A Day to Remember – Right Where You Want Me To Be
These pop-punkers hit it good with this song. It’s upbeat, catchy but most of all its festive. Not really much to say on this one, it’s pretty self explanatory.
#7 Coldplay – Christmas Lights
I’m not usually or ever have been a Coldplay fan however I’ve been hooked to this song since its release in 2010. It’s lyrics are stereotypically British with talks of London and just general British society. Fairplay you’ve won me over with this one Coldplay.
#8 The Used – Alone This Holiday
It’s depressing, it’s emotional but that’s how I like it. This song reminds me of being back at school again. Love.
#9 REAL FRIENDS – I Had a Heart
Real Friends have been one of my favourite bands of 2013 and with this Christmas song I just love them ten times more. Check out Real Friends.
#10 MXPX – Christmas Day
Released in 1998, these punk rockers have smashed it. With their punchy guitars they grab the feeling of embracing Christmas cheer.
